Egress window or basement walkout: which conversation comes first?

Compare the intended use before comparing two different construction scopes.

Access planning

Define the goal

If the primary goal is emergency escape and light, a window-and-well system may be the starting discussion. If you want regular yard access through a full door, bring a walkout into the comparison. The property assessment determines which options merit design.

Let grade inform the options

An exposed wall and a deeply below-grade wall can produce very different proposals. Show stairs, retaining features, decks, and access to the yard. A full entrance involves its own foundation, door, stair, and drainage interfaces.

Compare complete packages

Ask each proposal to identify the components, structural work, water management, permits, inspections, and restoration. The two systems should be compared against the goal for the home, not only the starting price.
